Innovative Application of O-Type Ball Valves: Breaking Conventions for Precision Control

Valve Technology Sharing: An O-Type Ball Valve Innovation

In the industrial valve sector, O-type ball valves are traditionally regarded as on-off valves, primarily used for fully opening or shutting off flow. Rarely are they considered suitable for flow regulation. However, under specific conditions, these valves can go beyond their conventional role, delivering precise control and demonstrating remarkable adaptability.

Pneumatic O-Type Ball Valve

A recent case involving a customer's precise dosing process is a prime example of the innovative use of an O-type ball valve. The client faced two major challenges at the feed inlet of their reactor: rising internal pressure made it difficult for traditional control valves to operate stably, and the limited installation space demanded a compact solution with flexible control over valve opening. Standard configurations could not meet these strict requirements, prompting the need for a more advanced approach.

In response, our design team conducted a comprehensive analysis based on the medium's pressure and temperature characteristics, and boldly chose an O-type ball valve as the core solution. To overcome space constraints, a three-segment pneumatic actuator was innovatively employed, allowing for compact installation. To ensure precise dosing, a three-stage control logic was designed: full-open for bulk feeding → slight opening for fine adjustment → full-close to shut off. In addition, a positioner and feedback system were installed and integrated into the DCS, enabling real-time monitoring and accurate control of valve position, ultimately achieving the client's exacting requirements for precision dosing.

Field results confirmed that with proper engineering and customization, O-type ball valves are fully capable of handling flow regulation tasks, offering performance well beyond traditional expectations.
